The newest story in Green Bay involves the team's willingness to sign Michael Vick, fresh out of jail and looking for a way back into the NFL. While I despise Vick as a person for his disgusting behavior of a few years ago, his talent may help the cause of this packers team. Let's have a look at the pros and cons.
Pros. Michael Vick, in addition to playing quarterback, can also be featured as a wide receiver. The potential for creative plays is huge once two men on the field can capably throw the ball. Vick's rushing abilities (reverse plays, etc.) can't be discounted either in these situations.
Vick would also serve as a capable backup to Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, who is great in his own right, but is always prone to injury. Any team would prefer to have an experienced, talented backup at quarterback to an untested second-rate football player.
Cons: Vick, at the quarterback position, is extremely fast, but erratic and shaky as well. Vick typically tries to do more as a running back than a quarterback should, which often works out, but often ends up hurting the team. He is sacked more than any other NFL quarterback, and loses 6 yards per sack on average.
Vick also has a lousy career quarterback rating (just 75.7) and his skills as a passer are lacking. In his career, Vick has only completed approximately 54% of all passes thrown.
The other drawback with Vick is the media attention. Attention that the Packers, who just ended the Brett Favre saga, probably don't need. This is the first year in many that I can remember that the Packers are the center of attention in the media. If the Packers do sign him they will be questioned every week if they made the right choice, no one will take their eye off of Green Bay for the rest of the season and the upcoming off season.
Is he a good fit? I feel that Vick in green and gold next year will be good for the team. It gives them a different way to score and can help them in many ways. Even though Vick beat the Packers in '02 the fans will probably welcome him with open arms.
When all is said and done, there's one player in Green Bay who'd feel more of an impact from Vick's involvement than any other. Aaron Rodgers, the future of Green Bay and the new face of the franchise. How will he react to Vick's presence? This is the factor that should be considered first and foremost.
