By Jacob Cooperman

A marvellous pet to own is a Hamster, particularly for children. They are easy to look after, they mix well with people and most of them like to be handled. They are likewise cute and do not need intensive care unlike other animals. But prior to purchasing one it is better to know if it is a suitable pet for you.

Even if hamsters are perfect for children, for people living in small homes and for those individuals who do not get a lot of spare time for pets, caring for hamsters still requires commitment. Otherwise, your pet could end up abandoned in a rescue home.

To help you make your mind up if a hamster is the right pet for you, here are a few tips for you to consider:

Hamster species are not the same- Hamsters come in varieties. And every variety has a different temperament, behavior, characteristics, appearance and suitability to be your pet. Some hamsters are aggressive and others are timid. Some of them though seem to have been made ideal for pets. There are also hamster species that appreciate the companionship of other hamsters of their own type, own sex and own age. Some of them, nonetheless, tend to become aggressive towards other hamsters as they get older, whether of their own breed or not; hence needing them to be kept apart from the rest.

The age of the owner- Hamsters work well with kids depending on the age of the child. On the whole though, young hamster owners should be overseen to assure that the pet is correctly taken care of and that important worries are addressed. Some species can get easily irritated when handled improperly and some of them may nip when hurt or annoyed. To prevent such events, young owners should be advised on a regular basis with respect to their care of their pets. Among adult owners however, specially for those who are at work during the day, hamsters make really good pets as they are happy to wait until evening for activities with the owners.

Availability of space- Hamsters, in the main, are ok for small spaces. This is why they are popular among apartment renters and people who live in small houses. But it should be noted that there are some species of hamsters such as the Chinese hamster that want large cages to meet their need for exercise.

Personal preference- The hamster species variations range from color to behaviour. Each breed is unique, so it is in the owners greatest interest to know his own preference when it comes to the type of pet they will keep.

The cage- It is advised that to keep a happy healthy hamster that you buy the biggest cage you can afford. As the more living space your pet has, then the happier and healthier they will be.
